
Port-Vendres is a major
port on the Vermeille coast and has a long and varied history
dating
back to Roman times and is beloved by artists as is its close neighbour
Collioure.
It has a large fresh fish market and in addition the fishermen still
sell their catch from little stalls at the port side.
On Saturday morning there is a colourful market on the place
d'Obelisque and a Sunday market in Collioure (five minutes by car).
Activities locally include sub aqua diving, waterskiing and all the
other water sports associated with the sea.
Port-Vendres has its little coves for swimming and snorkeling and sandy
beaches well .
There are boat trips to Spain and short distance trips to Collioure and
surrounding areas.
With
the border of Spain close by there is an opportunity to visit and
experience a completely different culture.
The border with Spain is about 20kms and the coast road is truly
wonderful
with views over the Mediterrean. Into Spain
the Salvador Dali museum at Figueras
is a must, there is a colourful
market on Thursday morning in this town which is also worth a visit.
Argeles-sur-mer which close to
Port-Vendres has 4,4 miles of sandy
beaches, designated 'blue flag' due to the high standard of
maintenance.
This is a wonderful wine growing area and the Collioure
wines are very
fine, wine tasting can be a very pleasant way to spend an afternoon!
Perpignan the capital city of the
region has a huge variety of events
thoughout the year, each September it plays host the the International
Photo Journalists exhibition, with the best photographers in the world
exhibiting their work. The exhibition is set in some of the most
ancient buildings of this beautiful city, and is highly recommended.
Throughout the year there are musical festivals for all types of music
from Classical to Jazz, Pop and traditional Catalan music and dance.
Perpignan is about 20 minutes by car from Port Vendres and is also
accessible by regular train and bus services from Port-Vendres.
Near by Banyuls sur Mer
has a magnificent
aquarium, a wonderful sandy
bay for swimming and in between Port-Vendres and Banyuls there are two
beautiful beaches one of which, Paulilles bay, has stunning
gardens and
large parking
area all recently completed and open for the first time in 2008. There
is an excellent golf course at St Cyprien which is less than a
half hour drive.
